In an early RadioHogan video entitled: Existentialism & Pragmatism, I described Existentialism as a quest for authenticity. Existentialists believe man becomes alienated from himself by the hierarchical, patriarchal, bureaucracies of life. Family is the first institution we encounter. Much of the politics of early family life, remains in the unconscious for a lifetime. Psychoanalysis can help overcome compulsive neurosis, alienation and to achieve authenticity. The following figures in the history of Psychoanalysis are discussed: Sigmund Freud, Karl Jung, Alfred Adler, Karen Horney, Wilhelm Reich, William James.

You make a good point. Mass media has denigrated psychoanalysis to the detriment of us all. Thanks for your comment.

My first major was psychology (in the late 1990's), and so I was indoctrinated with a heavy bias against Freudian psychoanalysis. Over the years, I've changed my opinion. I understand why people call it "voodoo", but in judging it by its predictive and therapeutic merits, I'd say it works just well (sometimes better) than the contemporary practice which usurped it. My favorite example of this is Walter Langer's 'The Mind of Aldolf Hitler' (OSS wartime psychoanalytic report from 1943).

Psychoanalysis is fascinating. I see it as a way of people understanding each other better which is always a good thing. In fact, I think Freud defined Psychoanalysis as such. Good video!!
