What kind of man was Ludwig von Mises? As this unique film shows, Mises (1881-1973) was a man who never stopped fighting for freedom: not when the Nazis burned his books, not when the Left blackballed him at universities, not when it seemed as if statism had won. With courage and genius, he fought big government until the day he died ... in 25 books, hundreds of articles, and more than 60 years of teaching. Mises's battles against Communists, Nazis, and other socialists, are featured in this film, as are his ideas of Liberty. There is also the old Vienna he loved, the Bolshevik prime minister he dissuaded from Communism, and a cast of villains from Lenin to Hitler, as well as such supporters and students as Murray Rothbard, Ron Paul, Bettina Greaves, M. Stanton Evans, Mary Peterson, Joseph Sobran, and Yuri Maltsev. Among his many accomplishments, Mises showed that socialism had to fail, that central banking causes recessions and depressions, that the gold standard is honest money, and that only laissez-faire capitalism is fully compatible with Western civilization. Mises was the twentieth century's foremost economist, and one of its most important champions of Liberty. Here is a film that does justice to this extraordinary man, and to his equally extraordinary ideas.

Brilliant Man!!!

Wait, what did Mises write about fascism? I missed that part. Also, you didn't answer my question.
DeepRainforest (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Nice job apologizing for one who writes that Fascism has won eternal "merit." Libertarianism is as contradictory and pathetic as communism, Keynesianism, conservatism, and all other economic and political thought that advocates and apologizes for aggressively invasive and occupational agricultural city-Statism (civilization.)

I see. My pitiful intellect aside, I'm curious as to whether or not you would be willing to offer YOUR opinion as to who would be a superior candidate as a model for economic and political thought, that we all might be roused from our pseudo-intellectual stupor. It's tricky though. Someone might come along armed with an impervious arsenal of misrepresentative half-quotes and ad hominems. Or worse, they might employ the automatic win tactic and call him a "tard"!

What a pathetic exuse for a man who stated Fascism had won eternal merit. Your intellect is as pitiful as any Communist who concocts similar justifications.

Note: The original quote will be conceptually challenging to person's lacking in the ability to understand a small degree of Socratic irony.

To understand Mises', one must understand the difference between "intentions" and "outcomes". Affirming a party's noble intentions, or even the benefit of the immediate outcomes, does not, of course, confer approval of the ultimate outcomes. "Fascism can triumph today because universal indignation at the infamies committed by the...communists has obtained for it the sympathies of wide circles... There is, however, only one idea that can be effectively opposed to socialism, that of liberalism."
DeepRainforest (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Actually, not. But it's funny watching your evasion. Go ahead and look it up, p. 51. It's available online for the cost of it's market value. Zilch. And I'd take you up on your bet, but I doubt your word is any good, and you're bullshitting that you even have a couple thin dimes to rub together.

I haven't read "Liberalism", but I'd be willing to bet one scrillion dollars that if the quote you've isolated were to be expanded, one would find that Mises comes to a conclusion which is the exact opposite of the one which you are attempting to attribute to him.
